With the declaration of the State fish of Gujarat on November 21, 2023, the total number of aquatic species declared/ designated as either ‘State fish’, ‘State aquatic animal’ or ‘State animal’ became 21. As on 21st November 2023, there are 23 States/ UTs which have declared their ‘State fish’ and 3 which have declared their ‘State aquatic animal’. Another two i.e. Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have declared marine species as their ‘State animal’, of which the former selected a marine fish and the latter, a marine aquatic animal.
